Perceived Factors that Predict the Availability of Social Support When It Is Needed by Older Adults in Nnewi, South-East Nigeria
The aim of this study was to ascertain the perceived factors that predict availability of social support whenever it is needed by older adults in Nnewi, south-east Nigeria. Several studies have emerged on provision of social support to older adults by various support networks; nevertheless, little is said on availability of the support whenever it is needed. Social supports from various support networks whenever it is needed will to a large extent reduces the outsized number of frail older adults. Quantitative data from questionnaires were collected consisting of response from 528 older adults who were 60 years or older. The result of the study reveals that some factors such as financial status, attitudes of the children and health status were statistically significant in predicting whether older adults will receive social support when it is needed. The implication of the findings is for policies that address social welfare, security and protections for older adults in Nigeria.
