Abstract

The local government administration in Nigeria, particularly in Imo State, has faced significant challenges in achieving good governance and national development. Despite being the tier of government closest to the people, local government administration in Nigeria has failed to deliver desired results. The recruitment of leaders and control of resources have become overly centralized, leading to a disconnect between the government and rural communities. This study aims to investigate how local government administration in Nigeria can be democratized to ensure greater participation from local communities in the recruitment of leaders. The research methodology employed secondary data collection and observational methods. The findings suggest that local government administration in Nigeria should adhere to democratic principles, similar to higher tiers of government. Furthermore, a uniform legal framework should be established across all 774 local government areas in the country, as enshrined in the law. The study concludes by recommending that the third tier of government in Nigeria must operate with uniform national governance structures, free from interference from superior tiers. This is essential for promoting good governance, national development, and inclusive people-oriented governance at the grassroots level.
