Abstract

This paper examines the effect of oil spillage on fish in Nigeria considering its relatedness to Niger Delta Region. It further isolates types of oil spillage, overview of oil spills in the Niger Delta and causes of the oil spills. It also analysed the effects of oil spillage on fish using descriptive method to obtain logical
deductions and sequential presentation of facts from the data obtained to give a clear picture of the problems caused by oil spillage on fish. The environmental and economic effects of oil spills on the livelihood of the people were reviewed. The direct
and indirect effects and the factors that influence the degree of impact on fish were discussed. The general socio-economic effect on the fish farmers and poor masses was not left out. Techniques that should be utilized to prevent and control the situation are suggested. and possible recommendations made.
