Abstract

Physical activity is a key health-seeking behavior that improves and promotes the well-being of individuals. The environment serves as the arena for physical activity participation, and it must be healthy and free from hazards. This paper explored the role of healthy environment for effective physical activity for promoting healthier living. The paper revealed that physical activity includes all forms of movement during leisure, transport, work, or domestic activities and those both moderate and vigorous activities enhance healthy outcomes. Regular participation is linked to improved physical fitness, cardio-metabolic and bone health, cognitive and mental outcomes, and reduced body fat across age groups. It also lowers the risk of mortality, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and pregnancy-related complications. A healthy environment supports positive physical activity behaviors, contributing to physical, mental, and social well-being. It was concluded, among others, that governments should design and maintain conducive environments for physical activity and recreation to improve public health and wellness.
