Abstract

This study investigated the relationships between perceived employer corporate citizenship, organisational prestige, organisational support and work engagement among 143 working adults in 8 commercial banks in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria. Data were randomly collected from volunteers through perceptions of corporate social responsibility, perceived organisational prestige, perceived organisational support and the Utrecht work engagement scales. Consistent with the three hypotheses tested, the results of the regression analyses showed that perceived employer corporate citizenship, perceived organisational prestige and perceived organisational support are all significantly and positively related to employee work engagement. These results were discussed based on social identity and the social exchange theories. It has implications for companies to view investments in corporate citizenship as imperative, where they should continue to show more commitment to society and sustain corporate effort since such behaviour enhances employees’ work engagement. Companies should also try to maintain good reputation and give more support to their employees because all these are reciprocated in terms of the employees exerting more personal resources capable of re-positioning these companies for optimum performance.
